Create a clear payment request with traceable parties, scope, totals and terms.

Direct answer

An invoice should identify supplier and customer, use a unique number and date, describe the supply, show quantities or fees, state totals and payment terms, and include VAT details only where applicable.

Worked example

For a two-line service invoice, describe each deliverable, enter quantity and unit price, check subtotal and any valid tax, then review client details and payment terms before downloading.

Limits to check

A generated invoice is not automatically a valid VAT tax invoice. Registration status, supply type and statutory fields still matter.
