Pikitup, the official waste management service provider for the City of Johannesburg, is looking for 400 diligent and motivated individuals to join our team as General Workers. This role is critical in maintaining the cleanliness and hygiene of our city. Purpose of the Role

The primary goal of this position is to perform various cleaning and refuse bin delivery tasks. These tasks are essential for the smooth operation of our waste management services and include, but are not limited to:

  • Street cleaning and sweeping
  • Stacking waste
  • Lane flushing
  • Removing animal carcasses
  • Delivering refuse bins

Key Responsibilities

  1. Street Cleaning and Sweeping: Ensure all assigned streets are clean, which includes sweeping and collecting litter.
  2. Bin Cleaning: Clean and maintain all refuse bins regularly.
  3. Protective Gear: Always wear the provided protective clothing while on duty to ensure personal safety.
  4. Distribution of Bags: Draw the correct number of refuse bags from the store and distribute them accordingly. Ensure consumers receive the right number of bags based on the service provided.
  5. Collection and Stacking: Collect refuse bags from designated areas and place them on trolleys for stacking. Clear any spillages that occur due to bag breakage.
  6. Bin Delivery: Collect new or replacement bins from the central store and load them onto the delivery truck. Offload and place bins at the designated delivery points.
  7. Customer Interaction: Ensure customers sign for bin deliveries and receive a copy of the delivery receipt. Liaise with members of the public, service users, and officials from other departments to promptly resolve complaints and queries.
  8. Safety Reporting: Report all safety incidents, equipment issues, and injuries to the team leader.
  9. Task Completion: Ensure all daily tasks are completed efficiently.
  10. Additional Tasks: Perform any other tasks as delegated by the supervisor.

Minimum Requirements

  • Education: Grade 10 or equivalent.
  • Experience: At least 12 months of experience in cleaning or general work.
  • Criminal Record: Must have no criminal record.
  • Fitness: Must be physically and mentally fit.
  • Residency: Must be a South African citizen residing within the City of Johannesburg.

Knowledge, Skills, and Behaviors

  • Knowledge of Procedures: Understand relevant company procedures and legislation.
  • Tool Proficiency: Knowledge of relevant tools, equipment, and procedures.
  • Instruction Following: Ability to follow instructions precisely.
  • Task Prioritization: Ability to prioritize and execute assigned tasks efficiently.
