BLASTING ASSISTANT TRAINEE/S –BME Company (Apply Now)
Introduction
BME, a leading division of Omnia and a recognised innovator in the explosives and blasting industry, in partnership with Valterra Platinum Mine (Mogalakwena), is proud to introduce a community-focused development programme aimed at empowering young people within the Mogalakwena Municipality. Guided by the principles of the National Youth Commission Act 19 of 1996, this initiative provides an exceptional opportunity for out-of-school and unemployed youth to gain skills, exposure, and practical experience within the mining and explosives environment.
The Blasting Assistant Trainee programme has been designed not only to address existing skills gaps but also to equip participants with workplace readiness, technical capabilities, and foundational knowledge essential for future employability in the mining sector. By taking part in this initiative, trainees will learn from seasoned explosives professionals, gain insight into mining operations, and engage in meaningful work that contributes to the efficiency and safety of blasting activities on site.
This opportunity is ideal for young individuals who demonstrate discipline, eagerness to learn, strong problem-solving abilities and the resilience required for physically intensive and safety-critical work environments.
Purpose of the Programme
The Blasting Assistant Trainee programme seeks to:
Develop competent entry-level blasting support personnel.
Create employment pathways for youth in mining communities.
Transfer foundational technical knowledge and essential workplace behaviours.
Promote safe and responsible blasting practices in line with mine, legal and BME protocols.
Provide real-world exposure where trainees support qualified Blasters in daily operations.
In essence, the objective is to cultivate a pipeline of capable individuals who can eventually progress toward further certifications or specialised blasting careers.
Minimum Qualifications
Applicants must have completed Matric / Grade 12 with the following compulsory subjects:
English
Mathematics
Physical Science
A minimum of 40% in each of the above subjects is required. These subjects are essential due to the technical nature of blasting, which requires comprehension of measurements, scientific principles, numerical calculations, reading instructions, and understanding safety documentation.
Experience Requirements
This is an entry-level opportunity, and therefore:
No prior work experience is required.
Individuals must simply demonstrate willingness to learn and the physical capability to work outdoors in demanding mine conditions.
Previous exposure to mining, engineering, or technical environments will be advantageous but not compulsory.
The programme is designed to train candidates from the ground up.
Core Duties & Responsibilities
As a Blasting Assistant Trainee, candidates will work under the guidance and supervision of a qualified Blaster. Duties are both practical and administrative and require discipline, attention to detail, and consistent adherence to safety standards.
Below is a detailed explanation of key responsibilities:
- Participation in Risk Assessments and Safe Work Declarations
Before entering any blasting or charge-up area, the trainee must assist the Blaster to:
Conduct formal risk assessments.
Complete safe work declarations.
Identify hazards such as unstable ground, misfires, obstructions, water-filled holes, or faulty drilling.
Ensure that all safety controls required by mine regulations are implemented.
This step is essential to maintain mine safety and prevent incidents.
- Assisting in Preparing Blast and Charge-Up Areas
Trainees play an important support role in setting up the blast area according to legal, client, and BME protocols. Responsibilities include:
Clearing obstructions for equipment access.
Helping gather blasting materials.
Verifying that all equipment and tools meet operational standards.
Reporting irregularities or unsafe conditions promptly.
- Inspecting the Site with the Blaster
Together with the Blaster, the trainee will:
Walk the target block or mining bench.
Understand the blast layout and plan.
Assist in identifying drill patterns, burdens, spacings, and hole distribution.
Ensure that the blast plan aligns with mine specifications.
This process helps trainees understand how safe and effective blasting is planned.
- Marking and Barricading the Blast Area
Trainees are responsible for:
Marking off the workspace using client-approved barricading materials.
Ensuring that no unauthorised personnel enter the blast zone.
Maintaining visibility of warning signage.
Following strict instructions regarding demarcation boundaries.
Correct barricading prevents accidents and protects workers and equipment.
- Mapping and Verifying Drill Holes
The trainee must also:
Map all drilling holes accurately.
Confirm that the drill pattern aligns with the blasting design.
Identify missing or incorrectly positioned holes.
Document deviations and communicate them to the Blaster or drilling team.
Proper hole mapping ensures consistency and uniformity in blasting operations.
- Depth Measurement and Quality Verification
Mining blasting depends heavily on precision. Therefore, trainees must:
Measure hole depths using the correct tools.
Verify that holes match prescribed drilling depths.
Report over-drilled or under-drilled holes.
Identify issues such as collapsed holes, water presence, or blockages.
These checks determine how effective and safe the final blast will be.
- Actively Identifying Deviations and Reporting Issues
If a trainee encounters any deviation from the mining or blasting plan, they must:
Communicate assertively and professionally.
Notify the Blaster, Foreman, mine staff, or drill contractor.
Provide accurate information so corrective action can be taken.
This responsibility builds confidence, communication skills, and technical judgement.
- Collecting Blasting Accessories
When instructed, trainees will fetch the correct blasting components, such as:
Detonators
Boosters
Shock tubes
Weigh-down material
Connecting accessories
Ensuring the right materials are used reduces the risk of blast failure or dangerous misfires.
- Placement of Detonators and Boosters
Under supervision, trainees will:
Place detonators and boosters at the collar of each drill hole.
Follow the blast plan precisely.
Arrange materials safely to prepare for priming.
This stage requires extreme discipline and focus, as explosives handling is sensitive and safety-critical.
- Priming Blast Holes
This is one of the most important tasks:
Inserting detonators into boosters.
Securing weigh-down material.
Lowering the primer correctly into each hole.
Ensuring consistency across the entire blast pattern.
All actions must be performed under the direct supervision of the Blaster.
Job Competencies and Behavioural Expectations
The ideal candidate must possess the following competencies:
Communication Skills
Ability to read, write, and speak English clearly.
Understanding safety signs, instructions, and documentation.
Communicating openly about hazards or deviations.
Safety Discipline
Consistent adherence to all safety rules.
Respect for explosives handling procedures.
A responsible mindset and zero-tolerance for shortcuts.
Fitness and Physical Ability
The role requires walking long distances, lifting equipment, and working in outdoor environments.
Trainees must be medically fit for mining operations.
Personal Conduct
No criminal record.
No involvement in illegal substances or drug abuse.
A good level of personal integrity and professionalism.
Attitude and Work Ethic
Willingness to learn.
Respect for senior team members.
Commitment to completing tasks accurately and safely.
High attention to detail and problem-solving ability.
Programme Benefits and Learning Outcomes
By the end of the programme, trainees will have gained:
Deep understanding of blasting processes.
Entry-level technical mining skills.
Safety awareness and experience in risk management.
Practical knowledge in drilling patterns, explosives handling, and blast preparation.
Improved employability within the mining and engineering sectors.
Possible opportunities for further roles such as:
