South African Net-to-Gross Salary Calculator

Start with the take-home amount your budget needs. The calculator works backwards through progressive PAYE and UIF to estimate the gross salary to discuss.

Quick answer

There is no fixed gross-up percentage. Required gross changes across PAYE bands and when UIF reaches its ceiling, so this solver recalculates both until it finds the smallest gross amount that reaches your target.

Scope

Assumptions and limits

The result estimates gross cash salary under the shown assumptions. It is not a guaranteed payroll result, employment recommendation, or cost-to-company calculation.

Results use the values you enter and the conventions described in the methodology below. After calculating, review the result-specific assumptions and warnings shown with the estimate.

01

Why net-to-gross needs a real solver

South African income tax is progressive. You cannot reliably divide a target take-home salary by one minus a single tax percentage: different parts of taxable income fall into different bands, rebates reduce annual tax, UIF stops growing at its ceiling, and retirement or medical inputs affect the path.

This tool repeatedly calls the same tested payroll engine used by the forward salary calculator. It brackets the target, performs a deterministic binary search, rounds gross pay upward to the next cent, and confirms that the recalculated net result reaches the requested amount.

02

Using the result in a salary conversation

Treat the result as a cash-salary estimate, not a complete cost-to-company requirement. Employer retirement contributions, medical benefits, risk cover, allowances and bonuses can all sit inside a CTC offer while changing the amount that appears as gross cash salary.

Use the optional deductions when they are likely to apply, then keep a small negotiation buffer for payroll differences. Ask the employer to separate base cash salary, employer-funded benefits, employee deductions and variable pay before comparing offers.

03

Gross salary, net salary and CTC are different

Gross salary is earnings before employee deductions. Net salary is what remains after PAYE, UIF and other deductions. Cost to company can be higher than gross cash pay because it may include employer contributions and benefits.

A request for “R25,000 after tax” is therefore incomplete until both sides agree which benefits and deductions apply. This calculator makes those assumptions visible so the number can start a better conversation.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is the required gross salary exact?

The mathematical solver is accurate to the cent for this calculator's assumptions. Real payroll can still differ because your employment and tax details may be more complex.

Why does gross rise by more than the extra net I want?

Part of each additional rand may go to PAYE and deductions. The proportion depends on your current marginal tax band and inputs.

Does the tool calculate cost to company?

No. It solves for estimated gross cash salary. Employer-paid benefits and contributions need a separate CTC comparison.

Can I include a retirement contribution?

Yes. Add a percentage in advanced options. The engine applies the simplified SARS deduction limits and subtracts the actual employee contribution from cash pay.
