CAREER OPPORTUNITY
Ekurhuleni Water Care Company is seeking a skilled and safety-conscious Fitter to support the reliability, efficiency and operational performance of plant and mechanical equipment.
This opportunity is ideal for a qualified mechanical artisan who is passionate about preventative maintenance, mechanical fault-finding, equipment reliability, plant optimisation and technical problem-solving.
The successful candidate will contribute to maintaining critical mechanical systems, reducing equipment downtime and ensuring that plant operations are carried out safely, efficiently and in accordance with established maintenance standards.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Mechanical Maintenance & Repairs
The successful candidate will be responsible for performing a broad range of mechanical maintenance activities, including:
- Carrying out planned, preventative and breakdown maintenance on plant equipment.
- Investigating mechanical faults and identifying root causes of equipment failures.
- Diagnosing mechanical problems and implementing appropriate corrective actions.
- Repairing machinery and fitting or replacing worn, damaged or defective components.
- Conducting routine equipment inspections to identify potential mechanical risks and early signs of failure.
- Completing and maintaining accurate job cards and maintenance records.
- Performing routine and preventative maintenance in line with approved maintenance standards.
- Maintaining workshop equipment, tools and lifting equipment to ensure availability, reliability and safe operation.
- Conducting condition-monitoring activities such as vibration checks, temperature readings and visual inspections.
- Identifying solutions to plant-related mechanical problems and implementing remedial actions as directed by the Line Manager.
Installation, Commissioning & Shutdowns
The Fitter will also play an important role in equipment installation and plant shutdown activities.
Responsibilities include:
- Installing mechanical equipment and components.
- Assisting with the commissioning of mechanical equipment.
- Decommissioning equipment when required.
- Supporting shutdown planning and execution.
- Conducting pre-shutdown inspections.
- Assisting with post-shutdown inspections and reporting.
- Ensuring mechanical equipment is correctly aligned and securely installed.
- Testing equipment following installation, maintenance or major repairs.
- Verifying equipment performance before handing it back to operations.
- Supporting safe and efficient shutdown projects while minimising operational downtime.
SAFETY, COMPLIANCE & GOVERNANCE
Safety is a critical part of this position. The successful applicant will be expected to maintain a strong safety culture and comply with applicable workplace requirements.
Key duties include:
- Adhering to Occupational Health and Safety standards and procedures.
- Immediately reporting injuries on duty to the Line Manager.
- Reporting unsafe working conditions, practices and installations without delay.
- Participating in safety meetings, toolbox talks and workplace risk assessments.
- Maintaining excellent housekeeping standards within the work area.
- Using tools, equipment and lifting machinery responsibly and safely.
- Following approved maintenance procedures and operational controls.
TEAMWORK, REPORTING & OPERATIONAL SUPPORT
The Fitter will work closely with the Line Manager and other technical teams to ensure that maintenance activities are completed efficiently.
Duties include:
- Meeting with the Line Manager daily to review maintenance activities and plan upcoming work.
- Coordinating with other trades to complete work orders and technical projects.
- Supporting maintenance teams during planned projects and breakdown situations.
- Providing practical on-the-job guidance and support to apprentices.
- Assisting the Line Manager with administrative duties, job feedback and maintenance reporting.
- Performing standby duties when required.
- Communicating mechanical problems and equipment risks effectively to relevant personnel.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Applicants should meet the following requirements:
- Grade 12 / N3 Certificate in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent qualification.
- Recognised Trade Test Certificate – Fitter.
- Valid Code B or C1 Driver’s Licence.
- At least 1 year of post-trade experience as a Fitter.
- Experience within the water treatment, wastewater, industrial maintenance or similar environment will be advantageous.
TECHNICAL EXPERIENCE
Candidates with practical experience in the following areas will be well suited to this opportunity:
- Mechanical plant maintenance.
- Mechanical fault-finding and troubleshooting.
- Equipment assessment and diagnosis.
- Pump strip-and-repair activities.
- Gearbox maintenance and repairs.
- Filter belt press maintenance.
- Mechanical screen maintenance.
