Scope

Assumptions and limits

This calculator estimates gross annual-leave value. Employer records, policy, contract, remuneration definition, leave cycle, tax treatment and the facts of termination can produce a different result. It does not calculate sick leave, notice or severance pay.

Results use the values you enter and the conventions described in the methodology below. After calculating, review the result-specific assumptions and warnings shown with the estimate.

01

Annual leave minimum and accrual methods

The Basic Guide to Annual Leave describes a minimum of 21 consecutive days per annual leave cycle, or—by agreement—one day of leave for every 17 days worked or entitled to be paid, or one hour for every 17 hours worked or entitled to be paid.

These alternatives are not interchangeable without context. Twenty-one consecutive days does not automatically mean 21 paid working days. This calculator therefore asks you to choose a days or hours mode and makes the conversion method visible.

02

How the gross leave value is estimated

For monthly pay, the ordinary daily rate is estimated as monthly pay × 12 ÷ (52 × workdays per week). The hourly rate uses annual pay divided by 52 and ordinary weekly hours. A known remaining balance is multiplied by the matching rate.

When you estimate accrual, the tool divides the entered worked days or hours by 17, subtracts leave already taken, and prevents the displayed remaining balance from falling below zero. Employer records should remain the starting point whenever they are available.

03

When annual leave may be paid out

The BCEA guide says employers may not pay workers instead of granting annual leave except on termination of employment. The result is therefore most useful when checking a resignation or termination estimate, or when understanding the gross value recorded by an employer.

The displayed amount is gross. Payroll may apply PAYE and may use a remuneration definition or policy that differs from the simple base-pay conversion here. Sick leave, notice pay, severance and public-holiday pay are outside this tool.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can my employer pay me instead of giving annual leave?

The Department of Employment and Labour guide says payment instead of annual leave is generally not permitted except on termination. More favourable contractual arrangements and specific facts still matter.

Is leave payout calculated on gross or net salary?

This calculator derives a gross ordinary day or hour rate. It does not predict the net payroll amount after PAYE.

Are public holidays counted as annual leave?

If a public holiday falls during annual leave on a day the employee would ordinarily work, the guide explains that it should not simply be counted as annual leave.

Does sick leave get paid out?

This tool does not calculate sick-leave payout. Annual leave and sick leave have different purposes and rules.

What if my contract gives more leave?

Use the employer's recorded balance in a known-balance mode. Statutory minimums do not prevent a more favourable contract or policy.
