Scope

Assumptions and limits

This tool estimates amounts only. It cannot determine UIF eligibility, verify contribution history, approve a claim, predict processing time or replace the official UIF service.

Results use the values you enter and the conventions described in the methodology below. After calculating, review the result-specific assumptions and warnings shown with the estimate.

01

How monthly UIF contributions work

The employee and employer each contribute 1% of UIF-liable remuneration. The current monthly contribution base is capped at R17,712, which limits each side to R177.12 per month when remuneration is at or above the ceiling.

The contribution result shows employee, employer and combined amounts separately. The amount removed from an employee's salary is only the employee share; the combined amount includes the employer's matching contribution.

02

How the unemployment benefit estimate works

The tool caps average monthly salary at R17,712, converts it to daily income using annual pay divided by 365, and applies the official sliding income replacement rate formula. The rate is constrained between 38% and 60%, so lower-income claimants receive a higher percentage of capped daily income.

Benefit credit days are estimated at one day for every four contributor days, with a maximum of 365. Days already used are subtracted before a selected claim-period and maximum estimate are calculated. The sliding replacement rate applies through credit day 238; remaining credit days from 239 to 365 are estimated at 20% of capped daily income.

Amount is not eligibility: employment circumstances, contribution records, application timing, documents and UIF verification determine whether a claim is approved. This tool only estimates the formula output from the values supplied.

03

Contribution, unemployment and family claims are different

This release covers contribution amounts and the normal unemployment-benefit estimate. Maternity, parental, adoption, illness, dependant and reduced-work-time claims are not calculated because their conditions and benefit logic need separate reviewed fixtures.

Use the official UIF online service for an application and claim status. Keep payslips, employment records and any documents requested by UIF; a calculator cannot inspect or replace those records.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the maximum employee UIF deduction per month?

At the current R17,712 ceiling and 1% employee rate, the maximum is R177.12 per month.

How many UIF credit days can I earn?

The normal-benefit estimate earns one credit day for every four contributor days, up to a maximum of 365 credit days.

Does a higher salary always mean a higher UIF benefit?

Only up to the benefit salary ceiling. Above R17,712 per month, this estimate uses the ceiling rather than the full entered salary.

Does the estimate guarantee UIF approval?

No. It does not evaluate the reason employment ended, verify contribution records, check documents or decide eligibility.

Can I calculate maternity UIF here?

Not in this launch version. Family and illness claims use different verified rules and will not be approximated with the unemployment IRR formula.
