Duties & Responsibilities
Our partnering workshops require apprentices and technicians who can actively contribute to daily operations. You will work under highly skilled mentors and gain real-world experience across multiple diesel systems. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Assist Senior Diesel Technicians
You will support qualified technicians with routine services, mechanical inspections, and repairs. This includes assisting in diagnosing engine faults, understanding component wear patterns, and learning the processes required for professional mechanical workflow.
- Perform Basic Mechanical Tasks Under Supervision
As you grow in your role, you will participate in essential mechanical activities such as:
Oil and filter changes
Brake inspections and replacements
Cooling system maintenance
Fuel system checks
Basic electrical and mechanical diagnostics
These foundational tasks allow you to develop a strong technical base, preparing you for more complex duties as your apprenticeship progresses.
- Support Engine Repair Processes
Diesel engines require precision and technical understanding. You will be trained to:
Strip, assess, and rebuild engines
Assist with component assembly
Use workshop diagnostic equipment
Identify mechanical failures and potential system weaknesses
This hands-on exposure is crucial to developing confidence in diesel engine behaviour and performance.
- Participate in Workshop Operations
Workshops function efficiently when teams operate responsibly. You will assist in:
Maintaining workshop discipline
Ensuring tools and equipment are stored correctly
Keeping the workspace clean, safe, and organised
Following all safety regulations, PPE requirements, and SOPs
Professional workshop behaviour is an essential component of becoming a trusted diesel technician.
- Complete Logbooks and Training Requirements
As part of your trade qualification journey, you will be responsible for:
Updating your apprentice logbook
Completing scheduled training modules
Documenting tasks performed
Recording hours spent on practical activities
This documentation is vital for your trade test, future job applications, and your long-term career development.
- Assist With Breakdowns & On-Site Repairs
Occasionally, technicians are required to travel to client sites to attend to urgent equipment breakdowns. You will assist with:
On-site troubleshooting
Mobile repairs
Replacing components under pressure
Supporting technicians in time-critical situations
These scenarios provide invaluable experience in real-world problem-solving and customer service.
Minimum Requirements
To ensure all applicants meet the standards expected by leading workshops, the following requirements must be met:
✔ Matric (Grade 12)
Passes in Mathematics and Physical Science are compulsory as they form the foundation of mechanical problem-solving.
✔ Mechanical Engineering (Diesel) Studies
You must currently be enrolled in or completing N1 – N6 Mechanical Engineering (Diesel) or a closely related qualification.
✔ Apprenticeship Registration
Candidates must either:
Be registered as a diesel mechanic apprentice, or
Have prior hands-on exposure to diesel mechanic training
✔ Driver’s Licence (Advantageous)
A valid driver’s licence will be an added benefit, especially for breakdown support.
✔ Availability
Candidates who can start immediately or in the near future will receive preference.

Package & Remuneration
The starting remuneration for this role is:
R10 000 per month
This package is designed to support apprentices while they complete their training and continue developing their mechanical expertise. Additional benefits may be offered depending on the workshop’s internal structures and policies.
