Job Purpose
The Engineering Assistant UG provides critical support to artisans and engineering teams across the underground mining operation. This role ensures that engineering tasks are executed efficiently, safely, and to high-quality standards. You will play a valuable hands-on role in maintaining tools, equipment, materials, and workshop processes while supporting artisans with daily operational requirements.
This opportunity is ideal for individuals with a passion for engineering support work, underground operations, and teamwork—no prior experience required.
Key Responsibilities
- Workshop & Site Support
Maintain exceptional housekeeping standards in workshops, stores, and underground work areas.
Assist with material handling, storage, loading, and dispatching of tools, equipment, and consumables to various operational sites.
Ensure engineering tools, workshop equipment, and machinery are well-organized, clean, and available when needed.
- Engineering Tools & Equipment
Safely operate and care for a wide range of engineering tools and underground machinery.
Support artisans during maintenance and repair tasks by preparing tools, arranging spare parts, and ensuring proper tool functionality.
Reduce equipment downtime by ensuring tools and materials are readily accessible.
- Technical Support to Artisans
Assist artisans in daily engineering activities both underground and on the surface.
Work side-by-side with artisans during inspections, fault-finding, scheduled maintenance, and repair work.
Communicate unexpected issues or safety concerns immediately to the relevant artisan or supervisor.
- Safety, Quality, and Compliance
Follow all engineering work instructions and recognized underground mining safety standards.
Promote a culture of safety by reminding colleagues to adhere to safe work practices and reporting unsafe behaviour.
Support the implementation of Valterra Platinum’s Zero Harm safety philosophy and standards.
- Teamwork & Communication
Ensure tasks are completed collaboratively as part of a coordinated engineering team.
Provide clear two-way communication with artisans, foremen, and team members regarding progress, problems, or required support.
Maintain strong professionalism in all interactions.
- Resource Management
Prevent unnecessary wastage of materials, tools, and consumables.
Confirm that all required tools, spare parts, and equipment are available before starting a job.
Assist operational teams in maintaining equipment within assigned work areas.
Minimum Requirements
Education
✔ Grade 12 / Matric with Mathematics and Physical Science (compulsory)
Experience
✔ No experience required
✔ Candidates with 18.2 Learnership experience will be given preference.
Skills & Competencies
Ability to communicate effectively in English
Physically fit to work underground
Strong awareness of safety practices
Willingness to learn and support engineering functions
