Key Responsibilities & Outputs
As an Apprentice X10, you will be exposed to a variety of practical and theoretical training modules that cover all aspects of Heavy Earthmoving equipment. Your duties will include:
- Machine Inspection & Mechanical Assessment
Inspect a wide range of Heavy Earthmoving Products and components.
Evaluate mechanical performance, operational safety, defects, wear patterns, and compliance.
Identify early-stage equipment deterioration to reduce downtime and improve fleet efficiency.
- Troubleshooting & Diagnostics
Perform basic troubleshooting on mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems.
Conduct functional testing using both manual tools and diagnostic equipment.
Assist senior technicians in analysing root causes of mechanical and electrical failures.
- Maintenance & Repairs
Complete scheduled and unscheduled maintenance tasks, ensuring all procedures follow strict safety and quality standards.
Remove, repair, and reinstall components, including engines, transmissions, hydraulic cylinders, electrical harnesses, and ancillary systems.
Apply safe workshop practices and site-specific occupational health and safety regulations.
- Field Service Operations
Work both in the workshop environment and on customer sites, performing repairs under supervision.
Conduct on-site service calls, equipment assessments, and planned maintenance activities.
Interact professionally with clients, ensuring excellent customer service delivery.
- Parts Ordering & Inventory Handling
Order correct parts required for maintenance and repair tasks.
Assist in stock control and record-keeping to ensure efficient job completion.
- Accurate Technical Reporting & Administration
Complete all administration duties related to the job, including:
Service reports
Labour bookings
Parts returns
Expense recording
Compile highly accurate Machine Inspection Reports (MIR) and customer equipment assessments.
Minimum Requirements: Qualifications & Experience
To qualify for this apprenticeship, you must meet the following educational and competency criteria:
Academic Requirements
Grade 12 / N3 with Pure Mathematics – Minimum 45% (Functional Math is NOT accepted)
Grade 12 English – Minimum 45%
Grade 12 / N3 with Physical Science – Minimum 45%
N2 / N3 Relevant Engineering Theory (advantageous), including:
Motor/Diesel Theory
Electrical/Electronic Theory
Additional Preferred Qualifications
Completion of a Technicians for The World certificate will be a strong advantage.
Basic understanding of mechanical principles, engines, hydraulics, and electrical systems preferred.
Licenses
Code B Learner’s License (Light Motor Vehicle) – Advantageous for field service exposure.
