Purpose of the Role

The Mechanical Fitter plays a vital role in ensuring the availability, reliability, and safety of all mechanical equipment across the terminal. This position provides hands-on technical support through planned maintenance, inspections, corrective maintenance, and continuous improvement initiatives.

As a Mechanical Fitter, you will work closely with supervisors, contractors, and other technical disciplines to ensure that mechanical assets are maintained in line with legal requirements, Vopak standards, and best engineering practices. You will also interact with the Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) / Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) to execute and record maintenance activities effectively.

Your contribution will directly impact operational continuity, safety performance, and asset longevity.

Key Responsibilities and Duties

  1. Preventive Maintenance and Inspections

Execute scheduled preventive maintenance (PM) tasks on all mechanical equipment in accordance with the terminal’s maintenance plans.
Perform routine inspections, testing, and calibration activities to ensure mechanical systems operate within specified parameters.
Identify early signs of wear, corrosion, fatigue, or malfunction and initiate corrective actions before failure occurs.
Ensure that all maintenance activities comply with OEM recommendations, statutory requirements, and Vopak engineering standards.

  1. Corrective Maintenance and Breakdown Response

Act as a first responder to mechanical breakdowns and unplanned equipment failures across the site.

Diagnose faults accurately and efficiently, minimizing downtime and operational impact.
Carry out repairs and replacements in a safe, methodical, and professional manner.
Participate in root cause analysis (RCA) to prevent recurrence of failures.

  1. Contractor Supervision and Quality Assurance

Supervise external mechanical contractors performing preventive or corrective maintenance work on site.

Ensure all contractor activities comply with health, safety, environmental, and quality requirements.

Verify that completed work meets Vopak standards and legal requirements before acceptance.
Ensure proper completion and sign-off of Work Completion Certificates and supporting documentation.

  1. Asset Reliability and Continuous Improvement

Actively support condition monitoring initiatives by identifying potential future failure points.
Provide technical input to the Technical Supervisor (Mechanical) regarding equipment performance and improvement opportunities.
Contribute to continuous improvement projects aimed at enhancing equipment reliability, safety, and maintainability.
Support the review and close-out of inspection reports and implement corrective actions where required.

  1. Spare Parts and Inventory Support

Identify critical mechanical spares required for reliable terminal operations.
Liaise with the Storeman to ensure adequate stock levels of essential mechanical components.
Assist in evaluating spare part usage trends to optimize inventory management.

  1. Standby and After-Hours Support

Participate in standby duties as required, ensuring availability for emergency breakdowns outside normal working hours.
Respond promptly and professionally to urgent maintenance needs, maintaining operational continuity.

  1. Technical Documentation and Systems

Read, interpret, and work from Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), loop drawings, and mechanical schematics.
Accurately capture maintenance activities by closing job cards on the EAM/CMMS system.
Support the loading and close-out of inspection work orders in line with maintenance planning requirements.

  1. Acting Supervisor Responsibilities

Demonstrate the ability to act as a Technical Supervisor (Mechanical) when required.
Perform supervisory duties, including task allocation, contractor coordination, and reporting, during acting assignments.
Uphold leadership standards and support team performance in the absence of the supervisor.

Equipment Covered by the Role

The Mechanical Fitter will be responsible for maintaining, inspecting, and repairing a wide range of equipment, including but not limited to:
Storage tanks
Centrifugal and positive displacement pumps
Loading arms
Manual and automated valves
Pressure and vacuum (P/V) valves
Thermal relief valves
Pipelines and associated fittings
Flexible hoses
Pressure vessels
Mechanical structures and supports
Firefighting equipment
Compressors

Minimum Qualifications and Experience

To be considered for this role, candidates must meet the following requirements:

Matric / Grade 12 certificate
Mechanical Engineering N4 qualification from a recognized institution
Mechanical Trade Test Certificate
Minimum of five (5) years’ experience as a qualified artisan within a chemical storage terminal or petrochemical environment
Proven experience in the maintenance, inspection, and operation of petrochemical and pressure equipment
Previous acting experience or demonstrated potential to perform supervisory duties
Strong understanding of Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHS Act) and safe work practices
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision

Knowledge and Skills Required

Sound understanding of Safety, Health, and Environmental (SHE) policies and principles
Strong mechanical and technical aptitude
Competence in using computer-based maintenance systems
Ability to analyze equipment failures and apply effective solutions
