🎯 Key Purpose of the Role
The Utilities Artisan will ensure optimal functionality of all utilities infrastructure by performing daily inspections, preventative maintenance, critical repairs, and high-level troubleshooting on refrigeration, boiler, and compressed air systems. The role protects operational continuity by minimizing downtime, enhancing safety compliance, and implementing engineering standards aligned with statutory and industry regulations.
You will be an essential part of the operations value chain, ensuring our plant meets performance targets through reliable utilities services.
đź§° Minimum Requirements (Must-Have Qualifications)
N3 Mechanical / Electrical Engineering / Refrigeration
Trade Test (Artisan)
Minimum 3 years experience working specifically with ammonia and freon refrigeration systems
Strong working knowledge of utilities equipment operation and maintenance
SAQCC GAS Registration
CAT B Ammonia Certification
đź› Duties & Responsibilities
- Daily Plant Inspections
Conduct routine checks on plantrooms, condensers, valve stations, chillers, spiral freezers, boilers, air compressors and other critical utilities areas.
Verify system parameters, pressure levels, chemical concentrations, temperature settings, and asset condition.
- Preventative Maintenance
Perform scheduled PM tasks based on work orders, OEM recommendations, and maintenance schedules.
Replace worn components, service refrigeration units, test safety devices, calibrate sensors, and ensure smooth operation of mechanical systems.
- Troubleshooting & Repairs
Diagnose mechanical and electrical faults on ammonia/freon systems.
Execute precise repairs on refrigeration compressors, evaporators, control valves, electrical reticulation, and utilities distribution systems.
- Safety Compliance & Risk Management
Strict adherence to PPE standards and safe handling of ammonia, pressure vessels, isolation valves, and hazardous equipment.
Follow all requirements under the OHS Act, SANS 10147, and statutory regulations.
Participate in risk assessments, audits, and safety drills.
- Documentation & Reporting
Maintain accurate logs for inspections, breakdowns, repairs, and maintenance routines.
Compile Root Cause Analysis (RCA) reports for major failures.
Develop and refine standard work instructions, troubleshooting guides, and quick-fix procedures.
- Equipment Operation
Safely operate lifting machinery, hoisting equipment, and mechanical handling systems required during maintenance.
- Quality Control & Housekeeping
Uphold exceptional housekeeping standards in all utilities areas.
Ensure production quality, asset care, and maintenance procedures meet operational KPIs.
- Training & Supervision
Guide apprentices, assistants, and junior technicians.
Support skill transfer and promote engineering excellence within the team.
- Emergency Response
Receive specialized training on ammonia leaks, hazardous spills, and emergency plant shutdown protocols.
Participate in emergency drills, including the Buddy-Buddy System for confined or hazardous spaces.

Core Technical Skills
Expert knowledge of ammonia refrigeration systems, components, operations, and safety procedures
Strong mechanical and electrical fault-finding skills
Ability to work with boilers, compressors, chillers, and utilities reticulation networks
Comprehensive understanding of industrial utilities maintenance
Systems & Compliance Knowledge
Safety protocols for handling hazardous refrigeration gases
Understanding of engineering standards, legal compliance, and SANS regulations
Ability to interpret wiring diagrams, P&IDs, and mechanical drawings
