INTRODUCTION
The West Coast District invites suitably qualified, motivated, and technically skilled individuals to apply for the permanent positions of Artisan Assistant. These posts form part of the district’s commitment to ensuring that health facilities operate in a safe, functional, and well-maintained condition to support quality healthcare delivery to communities.
The successful candidates will be appointed on a permanent basis and deployed at Bergriver Sub-district and Radie Kotze Hospital, where they will play a critical role in providing effective maintenance, repair, and technical support services. The positions are hands-on, operational roles that require a high level of practical skill, technical understanding, safety awareness, and reliability.
These posts are ideal for individuals with solid experience in general maintenance trades, who are physically fit, safety-conscious, and able to work independently as well as within a multidisciplinary team environment.
PURPOSE OF THE POST
The purpose of the Artisan Assistant position is to provide effective, efficient, and reliable maintenance and technical support services to health institutions within the West Coast District. This includes the maintenance, repair, and upkeep of buildings, installations, machinery, equipment, tools, and grounds, ensuring that facilities remain safe, functional, and compliant with statutory requirements.
The Artisan Assistant supports artisans and technical teams, assists with workshop operations, participates in standby duties, and contributes to the overall operational readiness of healthcare facilities.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
The successful candidates will be responsible for a wide range of maintenance and technical support functions, including but not limited to the following:
- General Maintenance and Repairs
Perform routine and ad hoc maintenance tasks across hospital and sub-district facilities.
Assist with repairs and maintenance of buildings, infrastructure, and installations.
Conduct welding, painting, carpentry, plumbing, and basic electrical work as required.
Support the maintenance of doors, windows, ceilings, floors, roofs, and fixtures.
Ensure that all work is completed to acceptable technical and safety standards.
- Machinery, Equipment, and Tools
Assist with the maintenance, servicing, and minor repairs of machinery and equipment.
Operate and maintain workshop tools, garden tools, and maintenance equipment.
Demonstrate the ability to use a conventional lathe or milling machine where required.
Ensure tools and equipment are used correctly, safely, and stored appropriately after use.
Report faulty equipment, damaged tools, or unsafe conditions promptly.
- Workshop and Support Functions
Provide support services within the workshop environment.
Assist artisans and technical staff with assigned tasks and projects.
Maintain cleanliness, order, and safety within the workshop area.
Assist with stock control, materials handling, and optimal utilisation of resources.
- Safety, Compliance, and Legislation
Apply knowledge of the Machinery Act and Occupational Health and Safety Act in all tasks.
Adhere strictly to safety standards, procedures, and protocols at all times.
Identify potential hazards and take appropriate corrective or preventative actions.
Use personal protective equipment (PPE) correctly and consistently.
Ensure compliance with institutional policies and national legislation.
- Standby Duties and Flexibility
Perform standby duties as required, including after-hours, weekends, and public holidays.
Respond to emergency maintenance calls within the sub-district when required.
Be willing to assist at different facilities within the sub-district as operational needs arise.
Work overtime when necessary to ensure continuity of essential services.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must meet the following minimum requirements in order to be considered:
Educational Requirements
Grade 10 or an equivalent qualification.
Experience and Technical Skills
Appropriate practical experience in:
Facility maintenance
Welding
Painting
Carpentry
Plumbing
General electrical knowledge relevant to maintenance work.
Ability to read, understand, and follow written instructions, manuals, and procedures.
Proven ability to use a variety of hand tools, power tools, and workshop equipment.
Ability to operate or assist in operating a conventional lathe or milling machine.
Knowledge and Competencies
Knowledge of occupational health and safety regulations.
Understanding of machinery safety and maintenance principles.
Ability to utilise tools, materials, and resources efficiently and responsibly.
Strong problem-solving skills and practical judgement.
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Ability to function effectively as part of a team.
PHYSICAL AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Due to the nature of the work, candidates must meet the following additional requirements:
Be physically fit and capable of handling heavy equipment and objects.
Be able to work at heights, including on ladders and scaffolding.
Willingness to work overtime and perform standby duties.
Willingness to work weekends and public holidays when required.
Willingness to travel and assist within the sub-district as needed.
A valid Code B or EB driver’s licence is compulsory.
REMUNERATION AND BENEFITS
The successful candidates will receive a competitive remuneration package, which includes:
Annual salary: R193 359 per annum

SELECTION PROCESS
